Please let me know if there is a more appropriate newsgroup for discussing
third party software for xp.

I was using Norton Antivirus 2003, when my sub ran out recently their
pricing model got me looking for an alternative. After seeing an offer in
Pcpri I am trying Command antivirus from commandsoftware. I am annoyed they
do not support email protection for Outlook Express. But I said I would give
it a go.

Today a friend reported that an email I sent contained the "Swen 32" virus.
A full check of my system with their uptodate virus files reveals nothing.
So it's obviously time to try another program. I was happy with Norton I am
just baulking at their annual price.

What next I wonder?

Thanks, Tom.

You'd think that people who actually found their way here
would have the ability to read. Swen spoofs e-mail
addresses. Your stupid friend would have received that
virus from you evein if your computer remained off and
unplugged from the wall for the past 2 years. It never
actually came from you, it only says it did. Tell your
friend and then tell everyone else that you know, whether
they own a computer or not because they may one day choose
to purchase one and you don't want them accusing you of
sending them this virus, do you?

Tell your friend: the Swen virus (and a good many others since Klez
which started it) not only picks from the infected address book a random
address to send itself to, but also one to pretend it has come from.
All you can say as a result is that it did *not* come from the apparent
source, but from an infected machine that has both of you in the address
book.

AS to AV programs, a good free one I recommend is AVG from
www,grisoft.com. For myself I use eTrust from www.my-etrust,com (a
subscription one). Another free one that gets recommended by reliable
sources is Kapersky Lite

I appreciate the heads-up on the spoof, though not the attitude. Are you so
knowledgeable that you can figure it all out? Why then do you use
newsgroups?

It was actually my friend's system admin's guy who reported my email had a
virus. So I can email my friend and he can pass on this tip to his system's
admin guy. Thanks.

I do feel sorry for you, I'm not sure I would get out of bed in the morning
if I had no more to learn :-(

Cheers, Tom.
