Not really. Red hat branched off the Fedora project as it's free Linux
distro, and you're able to get it free anytime you want. Documentation is
readily available online and on the Fedora groups. Linux also has a paid
version that is now called RedHat something...........Redhat still supports
the development of Fedora, though, so as to use it as a beta for it's
commercial version. Very good stuff, IMHO.

Hi.

Admittedly, I've never used Linux OS. Please, explain why Linux
appears as freeware in alt.comp.freeware, yet, cost dollars at a
store. Thanks, much.
Because you can download it and use it for free.

I've been tinkling with Knoppix (a kind of Linux, i think), downloaded
it at its website (took 3 hrs with my 512 package, for d 699mbs file),
installed it on another "test" computer (this one i don't meddle, too
lazy to do partition n dual boot n all that), got help from Knoppix's
website and others when i'm stuck, used open office n I like what I see.

So strictly speaking i got the "package" for free if u don't count the
time i used to dwnld and install n get help from d net, the electricity
used on the computers etc, etc, etc.

If i were to get Linux (Redhat et al) in a box, then i have to pay for
their troubles.

I am an Ubuntu fanboy.

I am running 3 distros including Ubuntu 5.04 Hoary and Mandriva LE 2005
which my preference still goes to SuSE. Ubuntu is great, where Mandriva is
mean for 'club member' then can get the extra add-ons. Fedora? since from
FC1 until to FC3, I felt too tired tweaking it to run smoothly into my PC.

NON-EXISTENT ngs in CROSS-POST promptly deleted!!

I tried RedHat four or five years ago! What a nightmare! I still have the
CD,
but since then have just steered clear of Redhat, Linux, Fedora, and all
their
other little off-shoots. Not ready for prime time? If Moz/FF/Tbrd et al
were
as popular as MS they'd be having the problems MS has. As it is, both are
needed to keep the 'playing field' "safe--r".

Five years is a long time in software development. I haven't tried
Fedora since FC1, but at that time it was very good.

And you think that information is valid today?

What does not exist for *you* exists for others, please resist the urge
to delete that which you do not recognise.

Don't know much about computers, do you? :->

Five years is an eternity in computer time. (And anyway, five years ago
RH was quite simple to install, I once directed an accountant on how to
do it by sending SMS messages back and forth, at AUD0.25 per message, it
cost me all of about AUD20.00. My consulting fee was _much_ larger.)

And people like you wonder why the vast majority of Linux users don't take
you seriously.

Get A Life.

<ahem>

<tap-tap> Is this on?

Good day;

As the duly elected Grand Poobah of the Vast Majority of Linux Users or,
VMLU(tm), I can back this up.
