February update breaks SMB sharing with Linux?

I had an SMB share on a Linux box (SuSE 9.1) working with XP for six months
or so. I just did the February XP update and the share is disconnected and
will not reconnect. It prompts me for a username and password but will not
accept anything.

I can ping the Linux box fine from the Windows XP machine, other XP shares
work fine, I can reach the Linux share from other devices on the network and
I'm positive I have the right username and password (I can read it off the
other machines that access the share). Anyone else experiencing this?

Can you run NBTSTAT against the IP of the Linux box using Samba ?

Sorry, I didn't mean can you run it.
I meant do you get NetBIOS results from the Linux box using Samba ?

Hi

I would suspect the SMB security update that is part of the
February updates.

Vulnerability in Server Message Block Could Allow Remote Code
Execution (885250)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-011.mspx

If you (temporary) uninstall 885250 (from Add/Remove Programs),
does it start to work again?

Wow, this sounds like a worrisome development!

Mine are still working fine, but food for thought - call it coincidence or
luck, but on the same day the Windows Security fixes came out (XP Pro & 2k3
Standard), Fedora had a SAMBA update also - I was applying fixes that day so
I did all my computers, regardless of OS.

Remove hotfix MS05-011 (KB number 885250) from any clients that need access
to your non-Windows shares and all will be well. Just make sure you follow
the workaround details in the KB article until MS (hopefully!) re-release the
fix.
