i have a laptop with a broadband connection, if i buy an
external v92 fax modem, where would i plug it in as i
have a conexant modem already installed in the machine.
And also if i am on the net with my broadband connection
will the other modem still pick up faxes at the same
time, being as it will all be on the same phone line.

If you plug it into the other end of the broadband filter, yes.

I've never used an external modem, so I can't tell you where to plug it in.
However, why would you do that when your laptop already has an internal
modem? They are perfectly good.

Yes, you can certainly pick up faxes and use your broadband connection
simultaneously, if you have it properly filtered and teed. ( I'm assuming
you're talking DSL and not cable.)
