DellAIO printer A940 manual saysdsl and cable modems not
supported by the fax software. does this mean i cannot
fax from this computer/printer via my dsl connection?

Correct.

You can ONLY fax by using an plain old fashioned analog modem connected to a
plain old fashioned telephone line.

You can however use an online fax service like www.efax.com. Basically they
do the faxing for you. They do charge for this service.

Can i attach a separate analog modem to the printer and
connect it to another telephone outlet, and disconnect
(unplug) the adsl conncection in order to put a fax
through on a case by case basis?

You should be able to install a regular analog modem alongside your ADSL
adapter in your PC - then use it to set up the fax normally. Connect the
modem to the "voice" port on your ADSL splitter, and all should be fine and
dandy.

I doubt you can connect a modem directly to the printer - unless it's an
"all-in-one" fax/printer/scanner - in which case you don't need the modem.
