We would like to find a way that we can send and receive faxes using windows
XP (home). We are prepared to buy a scanner/fax/printer (any thoughts as to
what brand). The phone has call waiting and also needs to be hooked to an
answering machine.

What software do we need and how do we set this up?

Thank you.

XP Home has fax software as part of the OS. You won't need any fax software.
To send documents via fax in XP Home you only need to create the document in
a Windows compatible application and have it 'printed' to the fax machine.
The only drawback is the document is sent at 200dpi.
The only hardware you need is a Windows compatible fax modem.
To set all this up, just run the Fax Wizard under XP Home. To launch the
wizard, check Help and Support.

Any good 4 in 1 printer should work.. that'd be Print, Copy, Scan, and
Fax. It should come with the needed software. The answering machine
can be a problem unless the fax listens in on the answering machine for
the fax signal. I have a ComShare device that listens for the fax
signal.. It can be a pain when it kicks in erringly though.
