Favorites/Bookmark Icon

Several of the bookmark icons did have an icon other than that of internet
explorer; for instance there was a fancy k marking Kelly's website and now
there is just the internet explorer icon.

What happened and can I get them back?

I know it's a minor problem, but it does provide a faster scan of the
bookmarks.

You could resave the bookmark from the site to get back the icons stored in the IE cache. Over time, the cache empties oldest files.
