James MCSE

All favicons in favorites menu have stopped working and have been replaced
by the default IE page icon. Here are all the things I have checked.

The icons are in my temporary internet files. I have deleted them then
re-added the page to my favorites at which time they reappear in the cache
but still do not work in either the address bar or favorites menu.

The icon shows correctly in the C:\Documents and Settings\~User~\Favorites\
folder.

Still no luck in the favorites menu though.

This affects all favicons no matter what site. Any clues?

Hi James -
These are known as favicons.ico (Favorite Icons) and they normally will only
last until your Internet Explorer Temp files are cleared.

You need to get a program called FavOrg 1.4 here:

http://www.gratilog.net/anglais/internet/favorg.zip

http://wittswallpapers.com/Oldies/favorg.zip

http://www.gratilog.net/anglais/internet/favorg.zip

or Version 1.2 here:

http://members.madasafish.com/~merc/favorg.zip

http://www.dothan.k12.al.us/vault/favorg.zip

(still free at these links) which will allow you to save them permanently in
a different folder and re-associate your favorites with the stored icons.
(It will also verify whether your links in Favorites are stll good, BTW.)

If you want to read more about it first, go here:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,9883,00.asp

You can also try FavIconizer, here:
http://www.codeproject.com/tools/faviconizer.asp?target=favicons I've used
this and it's quite good,. It will actually find about a third more than
FavOrg does (since it checks for referenced URL's), but lacks some of the
other cababilites of FavOrg, Recommended. (Warning, however - it's verrry
slow compared with the others.)

A third alternative is AM-Deadlink, free, here:
http://www.aignes.com/products.htm "AM-DeadLink detects dead links and
duplicates in your Browser Bookmarks. If a Bookmark has become unavailable
you can delete it from your Browser. AM-Deadlink checks Bookmarks from
Internet Explorer, Opera, Mozilla and Netscape. Additionally you can
download FavIcons for Internet Explorer and Opera." Recommended

Cool program but not the problem. I can re-add the favorites and they still
do not work on the Favorites list. However they do show up in the Favorites
folder. C:\Documents and Settings\~User~\Favorites\ The icons are there and
usable but they will not display in the favorites list or the address bar.

In James MCSE <[email protected]> had this to say:

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

I've been reading Jim's posts for what seems like eons. He's worth listening
to but in this case he didn't miss the mark but gave you an alternate
solution that still might not work for you.

Delete your TIF and try again, you have the same problem of course, you
already said you did. You know what you're on about. Once doesn't eartn the
MCSE easily, it's a tough testing process. Please bear with my insanities or
try them. They won't break anything. Kill your cookies? Done? Still the same
issue? I figure it will be but why not try it? You have already probably...

Okay, more deep... Security software: What do you have running that MIGHT
interfere with you loading and using the favoritites icon standard? Does
this work with an alternate browser? While I have NO clue what is the
underlying problem and I'm reluctant to say malware as I'm sure you're
already up on the spyware, virus, trojan, and the like I'm inclined to say
what have you running for security software that MIGHT be problematic? Some
BHO that's supposed to help you?

If you do not get your answer here then try the more specific groups but I
would recommend the security groups first. Really. Oh, and Jim's solution
might give you a bypass so you can live with the problem if you have to but
I say cure it instead of living with it. I hope I'm on the right track.

I suspect that your favorites folder is corrupt, or more specifically
desktop.ini.

Export the favorites.

Log on using a different administrator account.

Delete the affected favorites folder in its entirety.

Log on using the original identity.

Import the saved favorites.

Try re-adding the favorites one more time.

Hi James :-)

In addition to the other good suggestions here, you might also try the
following and see if it helps. Ignore any information that does not apply
to your OS:

In XP..there is a local user policy for Favorites, and there is a check box

Check to be sure this setting is not selected.

Hope this helps :-)

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I ended up just recreating the profile
entirely and importing the favorite to my newly created profile and new
favorites folder as well.

Icons are there and all is well. Thanks for all the suggestions and I kept
the program because it is pretty cool. You guys all do a great service here.
Thanks to all.
