Faulty Install?

Due to accumulating system problems, I recently reinstalled Windows. The last straw was when Win Explorer stopped working and returned error messages.

When it was finished, I was still having (different) problems. So I bit the bullet and did it again. Problems persist. For example, the system insists that I reload programs that I've used since the reinstall. When I check, those programs aren't registered. Other programs have partially, but not completely, reinstalled--and, again, they aren't registered.

There's more: the SCSI scanner has become cranky, especially since I installed my OCR program. In Device Manager, the USB controller shows a "?". I've deleted it to let Windows find and install the driver, but the "?" just returns. My USB printer works fine. The utility to change icons associated with various file extensions is missing, although I have been able to associate the correct programs. Sounds like OS all over again.

So, two questions: (1) I mistakenly loaded the video driver before the chipset during the reinstall. Does Windows require a strict hierarchy concerning the order in which drivers are loaded, and could this be the source of these problems? (2) If not, does anyone have any suggestions as to what's going on and how to fix it? I'd greatly appreciate any thoughts or insights.
