faulty connections

In June I upgraded to Windows XP. Since then I keep
losing my connection to the internet and email. Error
log says the IP address lease (then gives 10 or 11
numbers, different every time) for the Network Card with
network address (again 12 letters and numbers, always the
same) has been denied by the DHCP server 192.160.100.1

Calling Microsoft in the early hours of the morning I
usually get someone in India, sometimes I understand
them, but no real help. One suggested not to download
the new Window updates when they pop up at the bottom of
the screen because they may not be compatible. Another
suggested I back my computer to an earlier time, at first
this helped a bit but not now. The connection sometimes
cuts off every couple of minutes non stop when I am
working. Can anyone help me??

What type of broadband service are you on? Are you going straight to the
internet or via a router or hub? Have you talked to your ISP about the
problem? Have you tried another network card? How do you have your
internet connection setup? Could you give more information on the TCP/IP
settings you have set up for you network card?
