I am trying to upgrade my new pc from windows 98 to
windows xp home edition, however i keep getting the
dreaded blue screen saying...

a fatal exception 06 has occured at 0028:c000bbc2 in vxd
(01) + 0000abc2. the current application will be
terminated.

can anybody help me? or at least knows what this means!?

thanks

Hi Ben,

This is a new machine, and it has Win98 on it? Have you checked the system
hardware for compatibility?

Backup/save anything you want to keep then go through the process of
installing and pay attention to the questions (install a "fresh" copy of
XP) - although you likely have an "upgrade" version of XP, you can do a
"clean" install - delete the current partition (despite warnings - only
after you are sure you have everything you want to keep somewhere else) the
repartition and format - at some point, the installation will ask you to
insert the former OS CD (windows 98).
