I have a compaq machine running with Windows 200o Pro. I
just decided to upgrade to Windows XP Pro. I chose the
upgrade ability and started the installation. All is well
to the point were Windows is actually being installed.
There the installation program encounters a fatal error.

The log says:
Error:
SXS.DLL: Syntax error in manifest or polict file "D:\I386
\asms\1000\MSFT\WINDOWS\GDIPLUS\GDIPLUS.MAN" on line 4.

***

Error:
Installation Failed: D:\I386\asms. Error Message:
Incorrect Function.

etc etc.

When I close this message the computer restarts and
attempts to continue the installation process. This only
results in a new error message of the same kind.

How can I get out of this loop? Is there any way to get
my HD formatted and restart the whole installation
process?

Your particular error message is indicative of a bad
CD burn and /or a corrupt file image. To correct
the problem, use an authentic, original, Microsoft Windows
XP installation CD. If that's what you have, then get a
replacement.
