While running setup for xp upgrade from 98se, I get popups
saying certain files cannot be saved to my hard drive, and
then out of nowhere I get a fatal error message and I
cannot continue. I tried to get help from microsoft tech
support, but in order to do so I have to enter the product
ID number, and to get that, I have to already have
installed Windows XP. Classic Microsoft situation! Can
anybody help me? Should I buy a Mac?

If your machine is still in 98se, can you open the %windir%\winnt32.log and post the content to this newsgroup? You may want to use the following steps

1. start men
2. click Run ..
3. type notepad %windir%\winnt32.lo
4. copy and paste the content
