Outlook2003, using POP3. How on earth is it possible for Outlook to take
from one to several seconds for an email to be correctly displayed, as plain
text mind you, in the preview panel?

Note that this is POP3 - the email is already downloaded - and with emails
of no significant size. And if Outlook is going to take so long to display a
preview then why on earth does it not display a "loading, please wait" note?

This is on an AMD64 3200+ system with 1GB of RAM and SATA RAID, so I'm not
lacking in resources, and the machine is otherwise idling. Oh, and it's been
like this right from the start, so it's not as though the messagebase is
huge.

Turn off Word as the message editor.

That's one of the very first things I do to any Outlook installation - it's
not that.

do you have mapped drives?
an antivirus scanner scanning the message store?

(word as the editor has no effort on this BTW)

Mapped drives, yes, though they shouldn't be used by outlook - the
messagebase is local. Antivirus is Sophos, which has worked reliably for me
for years - it's set to scan on reads, in quick mode. Incidentally I don't
get any delays with other email clients, including OE, and it's not limited
to mails with attachments.

Outlook and outlook express are two totally different clients and you can't
compare how one works with the other.

if sophos is scanning inside outlook, disable it. if there is only one
mapped drive, I'd try disabling it and see if it helps.

No, I'm making the point that other clients work fine, and therefore the
problem is with Outlook, or some effect of Outlook. Sophos is not scanning
'inside' Outlook, and removing mapped drives makes no difference.
