fast user switching & drive access problems

The second user to log on with "fast user switching" can
not access the CD/DVD drives--gets message "Access is
denied." If switch back to first user and log off, access
is permitted.

Obviously this negates a lot of the benefits of fast user
switching! The problem doesn't affect hard drives, only
removable drives--CD/DVD/floppy.

XP Pro, SP1. I've searched Knowledge Base and google
without luck--thanks for any tips!

Hello!
There are a variety of ways to give users access to a
program that you install on the computer in your
administrator's profile.Copy a shortcut to the program into
the \Desktop subfolder in the All Users profile. That
makes the icon available on everyone's desktop.Or copy a
shortcut to the program to the \Desktop subfolder in each
user's profile. That makes the icon available to each user
separately. Some programs seem to store specific user
option settings independently when the user sets them for
the program while logged on under their own account, even
though they are using a shortcut to the program that was
simply cut and pasted from another account.

Thanks for your reply.

However, the problem isn't with program access, but with
physical access to removable media drives. Programs on
the hard drives run fine from any user, but only the
first user to logon can access the cd/dvd/floppy drives.

After the first user has logged on, then when one does a
fast user switch and a second user logs on, the second
user gets an "access is denied" message when trying to
read the cd/dvd/floppy drives via windows explorer or the
command line. Likewise any programs that need access to
the cd/dvd drives (expedia or cd burning) fail for the
second user. Logging off the first user fixes the problem.

Seems like there should be a registry fix for this? Or is
this a "feature" of fast user switching?

You are very welcome, Shap. Thanks for the kind words and the smile. :o)
Glad to have helped.

This setting goes back to NT/W2K days:

'0' = Compact discs in the CD-ROM drive can be accessed by all
administrators in the domain.

'1' = Only the user logged on locally can access data on the compact discs
in the CD-ROM drive.

I add things like this to other edits (in this case AutoPlay) as users may
not even know yet that they have the problem.

Thanks again for your comments and glad all is well.
