Is it my hard drive causing the fan to run extremely hard at interbles,it
happens even if i'm not using the computer and logged off?

Hi,

The fan, if connected to the motherboard and not directly to the power
supply, may be reacting to a call for additional cooling. This is rarely the
hard drive, but is more likely to be the cpu, graphics card, or power
supply.

Not really sure what you mean by "run hard" but if you mean it starts making
a noise, then it's probably because the fan blades move slightly on their
spindle and start contacting the power-supply case.

If this is the case, then it's possible that the fan will stop, with
consequential catastrophic failure of the power supply.

You could make sure that the rear of the computer is slightly higher than
the front which will cause the fan to tend to fall away from the case and
cure the problem.

Replacing the fan is probably more trouble than it's worth. Good idea to
keep a replacement power supply in reserve anyway - can be a life-saver on a
weekend. Sadly power supplies are made to a price, not for reliability.

It could also be that there is some part of the case that is intermittantly
vibrating. That can be very annoying - just a question of tracking down the
panel involved and securing it.

Are you using one of the more graphics-intensive
screen savers (when logged out)? They use a LOT
of CPU and cause things to run pretty warm...my Xeons
have variable-speed fans on them that kick into HIGH
at a particular temperature- this may be happening to you.
