I have a Dell Dimension 3000 and the cooling fan has been running faster
lately - like it does in hot weather. Today, especially, it's really
flying. I haven't changed the location or put anything in the way of the
air flow. Is this a sign that the system is dying? Is there something I
should do for this?

It is a sign of poor housekeeping. Clean the dust and grime out of your CPU
heatsink.

It may also ( less likely and more trouble ) be a sign of degenerated
thermal compound/ thermal pad. Remove the old thermal compound/thermal pad
and replace with new thermal compound ( if you've never done this before,
you should seek help - for example, too much new compound can be as bad as
too little compound.)

I haven't cleaned it since installing the CD burner nearly a year ago.
Thanks for the reminder.
