false 'must reboot to complete install' - how to get rid of it??

in XP we often get a small message box asking for a reboot to complete an
install. but there have been many reboots and no recent installs. how to
get rid of this notice??

A recent installation or an update had aborted or failed but left
enough of itself or an renmant. Track down this errant installation
and either (a) re-install it or (b) remove it via add/remove applet.
If this fails, then the Windows Registry might need to be edited.

Another option is to use the Windows Installer Clean Up Utility to see if
that install attempt is listed; if so delete it.
