Failure to stop processes

XP is really getting on my nerves. I have to hard boot
this thing at least 10 times a day. THe problem is that
I'll run my usual programs that I have run on ME and
other OS's all the time, and then certain programs will
just freeze up and stop functioning. When I try to close
them with rightclicking, I get no menu, but right
clicking other items on the task bar, etc etc works just
fine. I can't alt-ctrl-del the programs, because the
menu that is supposed to appear never does. If I close
one of the other programs out, that program ceases to
function and I can't do anything on that program along
with whatever was the first one to start. The only way
to get the computer functioning right again is the hard
boot it because going to start to shut it down or restart
it doesn't work at all. It won't let me do anything
until I hard boot it. This reoccurs at least 10 times a
day in a 5 hour period.

What is there to do to fix it? It already messed up my
sound card so I had to take the Audigy out and put my old
one in since the Audigy refused to work without locking
up. This is just insane because I bought this system
expecting it to be better than my ME and so far I'm
having more problems than I ever had with the latter.

Check for viruses. Some of the recent viruses can disable
task manager. I was having trouble a few months ago -
programs would hang sporadicly, and task manager either
could not kill the process, or task manager wouldn't even
start (or it would briefly flash before my eyes). Turned
out I had a virus - can't remember which one anymore. Got
religon on keeping my anti-virus software up to date after
that. No major problems since, although on rare occasion
an office application may hang and stopping the process
doesn't work right away (either it takes a while, or a
second try.)

Good Luck

Are you certain that all your software is 100% compatible with XP?

Yes, all my programs are up to date. I update windows on
a regular basis, and my AV (Norton) runs both update and
scan every night. I doubt all of it is 100% compatible,
but this issue has only started occurring basically since
my Audigy card decided to go defunct on me.

In order to work properly with Windows XP, all your application software and
drivers should be 100% compatible with XP.
