Failure of Defrag

Late last night I started a defrag of the 160Gb hard drive on my primary
computer. This morning the computer was still on, but totally unresponsive.
Nothing I tried would kick it into operation. Finally, after futzing with it
for the better part of a half hour, I attempted to turn it off. Not even
that would work. I finally unplugged. That did the shutdown, but when I
attempted a reboot, I received an alert that files were missing. I
attempted to run Win XP Repair several times, but without success. And after
years of telling people they must make regular backups, I haven't for some
time. Can anyone offer any hope for me to fix the problem and recover files?
I'll delay a complete Install for a few days, hoping for good news.

If it still says what files are missing you might be able to snatch them off
of another computer and put them where they belong. Depending on what the
files are this may fix the problem. Otherwise you may have to do a new
install of Widows. If you don't reformat or partition the drive and just
install Windows over the old directory all your data files and folders should
still be there. You will however have to reinstall all your programs and so
on from scratch. You could also do this, rescue your newer data files, then
install your not up to date back up and put your newer data files back
afterwards.
