Hello everybody! I have a very big problem so i was
wondering if anyone can help me out. My forest root DC has
failed and i have no backup at all. Now i am trying to
think what to do about it...maybe try to migrate to
windows 2003 but will that work?? I have 2 child domains
and they are still working but i will not be able to add
new computers to domain. So please tell me is there any
chance to save my domain.
Thank you

If you can't recover your forest root domain, your forest is dead, it just
doesn't know it yet.

You need to start spinning up the new forest and *maybe* it will allow you to
use a tool like admt from MS to migrate the info into the new forest.

Well, if you dont have the Forest root dc up then the end users and domain
admins will begin to see the consequences of it. Obviously, no domains,
sites, dhcp pools or shcema extension can be done. Furthermore, if you keep
it this why you are going to tombstone the orphened child domains , in other
words you need to recover the root dc. You could try migrating the users and
domains to a 2k3 forest by creating a shortcut trust between the new 2k3
domains and old failed forest domains.
