The F8 key on my keyboard does not take me into safe mode. According to the
"Re-set passwords" help, the "F8 key" is stage 1 of logging in as
administrator.

Is there another way of getting into safe mode?

I am the soler user of a new Sony Vaio pre-programmed with XP home.

Timing is rather important when getting to Safe Mode.
Click on Restart, then as soon as the screen goes black, tap the F8 key
repeatedly about once per second until you (hopefully) get to the Advance
Start Up Options where Safe Mode is one of the choices.

If you're having problems booting into Safe Mode, you might
want to try this free program.
