extremely slow booting

i've just recently installed all of the update patches.
after loading sp1 and patches beyond, the sequence of
booting before the windows xp (w/the slider) takes about
1 - 3 minutes to load. i've run defrag, cleanup, and
checked all of the parameters in admin, but i can't seem
to find any way to tweak that portion to boot faster.

it's frustrating to have a somewhat fast computer (that
used to take no time to boot) all of the sudden take so
long.

any help would be appreciated.
thanx in advanced.

I have 2 desktops and one laptopnow with Win XP Pro and
every one has become a slow boot machine after
downloading and setting up SP-1. Initially I thought it
was the dual language setup I used but upon checking the
registry, foung it was not a problem(a la MS info) so it
is becoming a real frustration with the XP, and if anyone
finds or knows of a fix, would surely appreciate it. With
3GHz Intel boxes and 1.7GHz Centrino laptops the system
should boot and shutdown in seconds not minutes!!

Being on a win98 computer would have no affect on your
ability to access the BIOS. Not to mention the small
detail that all BIOS are NOT alike, or mentioning that
avoiding the POST is not a very good idea.
Better would be to edit the startup programs and have
them start spaced out a little. There is little reason to
have ZA, an AV, Adaware and all the others start up at the
same time. Many can startup after the system is up.

I have the exact same problem. It even takes me 5 minutes
to boot up sometimes. Did you or anybody find a solution
for this?

thanks in advance,
Gerry
