When my notebook is booting it will start and then sit there for about a
minute doing absolutely nothing and then continue booting.

Any idea what coule be happening? Thanks
Richard John

Network initializing ? waiting to receive DHCP settings. Hard to say,
it might be an application service starting (timing out) or a process that
needs another running and it's waiting for it to run. Best to check your
System Event Log ( Clear/Reboot) to see what if any errors are being
logged during a normal boot process.
Click Start, Run (Type) EventVwr.Msc [Enter]

Right-click "My Computer", Properties, "Advanced" tab, "Startup and Recovery" Advanced button,
and change the two "Time to display..." settings to 5 seconds instead of 30, and OK your way out

I just did a restart and looked for errors and don't see any application
errors but did see under System W32Time errors 6 times during the
reboot - any idea what that might mean. Thanks for helping

It's Windows attempting to synchronize your clock with one of the
Time Servers from around the world. You can change/select a
different one that's geographically closer to you. Here is a listing of
some time servers:
http://tf.nist.gov/service/time-servers.html
Double-Click time display and then from the details box, click on
the "Internet Time" (TAB)

Changed settings from 30 to 5 and thought that it sounded like the
problem I was having but re-booted and same thing. I get the boot
screen with the little bar moving from left to right and when I listen
to the keyboard I don't hear the hard drive doing anything for at least
a minute maybe a little longer then it proceeds to boot.

Why in the world is it trying to sync with a time server when it hasn't
even begun to boot yet? This thing has been having problems since about
the time Microsoft Genuine Advantage first came out - I hoped that the
update last week would have fixed it but nope!

Are you running ANY Norton/Symantec product on the PC ?

Also how many Network Interface Cards are in the PC ? Any
(Like Firewire) not being used should be disabled to keep XP
from trying to configure them at boot time.

Not using Norton - using Computer Associates eTrust Anti Virus.
I do have a second network card installed - the RG45 card that came with
the computer and is running okay but recently installed a 3Com Megahertz
Lan + Modem card in the slot on the side of the notebook since am having
problems with my original modem card. Is it possible that there is a
conflict - if so how do I disable?
Thanks

I just checked under Hardware Device manager - had already disabled the
second LAN port but still had two modems - disabled the on-board - could
that cause a problem?

BIOS setup ( Key Press Del, F1, F2 ) at power on. Usually, if you
can disable any internal/on-board peripherals that option will be in
the Advanced or Peripherals category. Not all notebook BIOS'es
make provision for turning off peripherals. However, you should be
able to set the device to Disabled in Device Manager and achieve
the same results.

I will answer my own question - still slow to boot up - Heck if it
booted quick enough I would just shut down but since it is so slow I
have been Hibernating but as you can see from my other post most of the
time it comes out and then goes right back in - a pain either way.

I am also suddenly having an extremely slow boot up [10 min]- using XP Media
- OEM install from HP. I have defragged and up to date Norton Internet
Security 2005; Taking R. McCarty advise I checked the event log and found
repeated warnings at each boot-up for:
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation.
Error 51 [disk] - this error repated abotu 20 times for an elapsed time of
10 min.
Following the properties path on the error to
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
It says to replace the drive - a real pain - is this the only answer?

Run a diagnostic utility downloaded from the hard drive mftr.'s website.
You will create a bootable floppy/cd with the file you download. Boot
with your created media and do a thorough test. If the drive fails any
physical tests, replace it.

looking at the device manager, I cannot find a manufacturer of the hard
drive. The ID is IDE/DiskST9120821AS. The machine is an HP Pavillion
notebook. any ideas on finding the manufacturer of the drive?

ST is the identifying string for "Seagate Technology". What you'll
want is the SeaTools disk diagnostics (Desktop Version).
