are there settings I can switch that would stop frontpage
from writing extra code?
Define "extra".
Recent releases of FrontPage add less proprietary
information to the HTML than older versions. And Under
Tools, Page Options, HTML Source, you can control the
number of spaces used for indenting, which tags cause line
endings, and so forth.
In FP 2003, you can suppress the Generator and ProgId meta
tags (under Tools, Page Options, Authoring). In addition,
after choosing Tools, Optimize HTML, you can filter
comments and other elements you specify out of the HTML
for the current page HTML.
In FP2003 you can also remove comments, white space, and
other "unnecessary" elements every time you publish. To
control this, display the Remote Web Site Properties
dialog box and click the Optimize HTML tab.
In general, however, I urge you not to obsess about this.
At 56kb, a thousand extra characters take only about 1/5
second to transmit, and less if very many of the
characters repeat.
