I have a Maxtor 5000LE External HD that was hooked to my laptop via a USB
hub. I am switching things to my new desktop and the HD is not working. I
am running XP Home, which has been updated. The drive is hooked directly to
my computer, is listed under drives in Device Manager. But, I can't access
it under My Computer.

I have been messing with this for a few days and need to get it resolved,
but I am lost.

Turn the power off to the external drive, wait 10 seconds,
then turn the power back on.

CLck Start> Run
Type in 'compmgmt.msc'
Press OK

Click on Disk Management

Can you see the Maxtor?

If so 'right click' assign a drive letter.

I tried unplugging it, waiting and plugging back in and it still isn't listed
in Disk Management.

Does it make a difference if it was hooked to a computer running Windows
2000 and am trying to hook it to one with XP? I thought this would be an
easy switch. I am getting all my computers and printers set up differently
to make me more efficient. But, I have to be something wrong for this not to
work.
