I purchased an 80 gb hard drive to back up my hp laptop. I want t
copy eerything on my computer to the drive any suggestions on ho

I have a 200g external. I tried to do a mirror back up of my harddrive.
unfortunately none of the program files were available. I had to download all
again. however it will save the EXE and setup files for such. Makes it
easier.

I would just make a back up and make sure to save data and media files you
add to your main Hard Drive. up dating regularly.

I would recommend using a drive imaging program such as Acronis True Image
or Norton Ghost. This will make a compressed image of the drive which can
be put on the external hard drive you purchased. If needed the image can be
restored quickly. Update the image regularly. Acronis allows for the
creation of incremental images between full images, or backup changed data
by copying to a CD in between imaging.

Put 80gb in $20 USB2 enclosure & Image all partitions
with Image 4 Windows($30) or Drive Image or..

Safe from all but fire, flood,.. & is very
fast(Igb/min).

Any advise is my attempt to contribute more than I have received but I can only assure you that it works on my PC. GOOD LUCK.

Chris, I'm sorry, but your post isn't very helpful for the OP. Just because
you have had problems using a drive imaging program doesn't mean it wouldn't
work for the OP. Imaging programs are very effective for backup and
recovery. If you had problems then you might want to troubleshoot why but
please don't tell other people it doesn't work.

Sherry, I didn't think to ask. Did you buy a USB external hard drive - a
hard drive in an enclosure - or just the drive itself? If you just have the
drive, you'll need to buy an enclosure for it and then hook that up to a USB
port on the laptop.

Most external drives come with some backup software. However, I have
found Acronis True Image, as suggested by others, an excellent choice.
