Is it possible to password an entire 250GB external hard drive please?
Not bothered about encryption or anything too complicated or slow -
just something that would be quick and easy to use.

If your intention is to protect your data, the only way is to encrypt the
hd. Why don't you try Truecrypt from www.truecrypt.org. It's free, secure
and with ability to use keyfiles you'll never need to remember a password.
Just remember to have a couple of backups of the keyfile in case the
original becomes corrupt.

Thanks for this. Does this mean a lengthy process of encrypting and
unencrypting every file whenever I want to backup or retrieve them
though?

If it works anything like bestcrypt, then the answer is - no. A bit
slower access, but without the program no acess at all.

Why not use the power button on the enclosure? Keep it off-line until
ready to use it. Be sure to stop device via the icon with the green
arrow in systray before powering it down. You might have to exit any
indexing programs to do that, since they lock the files being
indexed/browsed, e.g. AvaFind, PowerDesk, ESP!, etc.
