When I try to send lots of files to my extrnal USB hard drive I get the message below. Some of the files go across but the rest don't. I've tried formatting the drive but it gets stuck about half way through. I've tried changing the policies between quick removal and opitmal performance but it didn't help.

"windows was unable to save all the data for the file [file name] the data has been lost. this error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware"

Please help me

Do you have enough power on the USB root hub? Disable the hub power
management. Patch the system according to MS KB article 822603 "Availability
of the Windows XP SP1 USB 1.1 and 2.0 Update" (available thru Windows
Update).

How do I disable the power management? I don't think that is the problem because it doesn't work on other systems either. I've also changed the hard drive case and it still doesn't work.

Open Device Manager/USB Controllers/USB Root Hub properties.
Now it sounds like the HDD itself is bad. Can you put it the box on the IDE
channel?

Thanks. Tried it but it still didn't work. I don't think I can put it on the IDE channel. I'm not really sure I know what you mean actually. Sorry. The case only has a USB connection on it.

What he means is to open the external case and plug the harddrive inside
the external case into your computer. Don't do this unless you
personally put the harddrive in that external case. If this is a retail
external harddrive and nothing has worked so far, and you can't get it
to work on any other computer either, I would return it and try to get a
new one. Sorry, but I had a difficulty finding the OP to see what the
original problem is. Not a very good layout for this reader sometimes :(

Woo, awful typo... You said you've changed the drive case, and it sounds
like you can open it and disconnect HDD. If so, open the desktop (is it?)
and put the HDD either on the free IDE cable slot or instead one of the CDs.
Too many "if"...
