I am trying to install a 160 gig external USB hardrive onto my laptop, XP is
recognizing it, and it begins to install it, only it stops and asks me for
the disc with the windows 98-2000 drivers, which of course i dont have cause
i dont have windwos 98-2000. So when i skip through this it stops
installation. I can see it in device manager under USB but its flagged as
not working properly. I am running windows xp sp2 with everything up to date.

Help!

Disk management doesnt show the drive.

Joshua:
It really would be helpful if you would precisely detail the steps you take
as you "begin(s) to install" your USB external hard drive. When you use the
term "install", I take it you mean partition and format that USB EHD. Is
that right? Or are you just referring to connecting the external drive to
your laptop using the USB cable?

You say "Disk management doesn't show the drive". Then how are you going
about partitioning and formatting that USB EHD?

You do understand that after you connect the USB EHD to your computer and
power up that drive, and boot the computer, you must partition & format the
drive using XP's Disk Management utility, right?

Basically im still stuck on the whole "plugging in the drive" part.

Here is what is happening:

I plug the USB drive in, it makes the little sound and the add hardware
wizard pops up, it starts to do its thing and then it stops, and tells me i
need a windows 98-2000 driver called TPPNTTRY.exe. It gives me the option to
get it off the disk (which it isnt on) or to browse for it. The file is
nowhere in windows and isnt on the install disk. So i just have to cancel
out of the wizard and thats it, i can go no further. It wont let me even see
any other files in the folders i have tried to broswse through. All of
seagates info and pretty much everything i have ever known about xp tells me
that i shouldnt have to install a driver. Once i go through the abortive
install process the drive shows up under USB in the device list but it is
flagged as not working. I can't get to the point where i even have the
chance to format or partition the drive because at no point can i see it in
the disk manager. I simply need the system to recognize the thing as
existing so that i can do anything to it at all.

I seem to have fixed it, I typed the name of the file it kept asking me for
(TPPNTTRY.exe) and downloaded it from some driver site, then when it asked me
to find the file i just pointed it in the right direction and it all started
right up nicely. I was kind of wary of using some file i found on a random
site, i hope it was nothing shady, but everything seems to be going fine.
