I'm running XP Pro
I want to be able to have my kids log on and have the pc direct them to
their external drive.
(Poor man’s server)
How and what steps do I need to do.
Thanks

If I understand you correctly you want the "My Documents" for your children
to point to an external hard drive.
If this is the case;
Logon with the ID your kids will use (if more than one logon with each
ID...there is another way to change the default user ID but let's keep it
simple)
Make sure the external drive is powered on.
Create the folder structure you want on the external drive.
Point the "My documents" folder to the drive letter and folder of the
external drive.

To prevent them from storing anything on the local drive utilize a local GPO.

You can then utilize a GPO

Actually you only need to be sure the drive/s are powered on, go into
each account, and in the Properties for My Documents, select the Move
button. (Right click on My Document, click Move). When it asks for the
new location, give it the drive letter/folder you want My Documents to
be in for that person, and you're done. From that time on anything that
asks for My documents will get it from the external drive. You have to
do that for each account that wants to use the external drive for My
Documents.
I don't think it moves existing files to the new location, so you
might have to move the existing files itno the new My Documents folder
on the external drive; not positive there.
