I have an external drive that I want to use to back up files. What do I need
to do? I have Windows XP2.

It would depend on what type of backup you are doing. If it's a large
external drive and you are simply backing up data files, you can simply copy
the files to the drive. If you want to perform a complete backup of an
entire system drive you can use the included NTBackup included in XP. You
may also want to perform a complete image backup of the entire system
partition.

Open Help and Support and search for "Backup" to see information on using
the included backup utility including a step by step tutorial.

If you don't want to download freeware or buy software, I reccomen
manually copying your files to the drive every couple of days.
Otherwise try SyncToy (google it). It is a MS Powertoy intended fo
file sychronization but can be set to backup files

XP has a backup program built-in. XP Pro will show up and with XP Home
you need to install it from the XP Home CD. It does find the external
drive as a backup device
