During a power failure while downloading updates to my computer my firewire
Western Digital hard drive became corrupted. This is the drive that I keep
my important "My Document" files. When I tried to recover my files using
disk check I noticed a message that there was insufficient disk space to
convert lost chains to files. Less than 50% of my external drive was full.
Now I am left with a drive with many (>31,000) *.chk files.

How can I recover my important "My Documents" from this drive.

I am using a Dell system with Windows XP. I have updated religiously. That
is XP, and Norton Antivirus. I am using a Sygate Personal firewall.

Thank you for any help "you" can provide.

Well now that you've done a chkdsk and it converted the lost chains to files
(had you used something like diskprobe, Norton disk doctor, or others they
could've been reassembled), all you can do is search through those >31,000
files and salvage what you can from within.
