noises, so I have bought an external cd rom, but it wont
find it, i have drivers and everything. im just stuck for
2 weeks now! someone please help me, steps would be great.

You could be having any number of problems.
1. You need to create a boot disk with drivers for your
external CD drive. See the MS Knowledge Base for
directions (or the mfg of your new CD Drive).
2. How did your system get clean? Did you do it or did
something do it for you?
3. Check your CMOS and make sure your CD (internal) is
enabled as a boot device (if not, put it first, followed
by your HD).
More info will be needed for a cogent response to be
posted.

I formated the drive myself, i have changed the BIOS to
boot from cd first, but the problem is, my cd rom isnt
working, so I have an external one I want to use, I
plugged it in to the com, not the usb though, i just need
to know how to use the new cd from dos so i can install
win xp pro.

you can't use the cd from dos since xp doesn't have dos!
what do you mean you plugged the cd rom into "the com"? is
it a usb drive or not.
don

Don't confuse the issue with unnecessary details.:)
Either "com" is an abbreviation of computer or it is the
com port. Take the path of least resistance and use the
floppy install method to get up and running. I have no
desire to give an in depth report on how to create a boot
disk with the drivers for the external Cd-Rom.

you should have replaced your internal cd drive, you are going to have a
bunch of issues trying to get this working.not that it cant be done but you
will be fighting XP looking for theinternal CD all the time, esp if its is
partially working.

Don't buy anything yet. Get the OS running first. The external CD was a
bad choice, as installing a new internal is a matter of 4 screws and 2
cables with a hefty price difference between the two, but if you just bought
it you can just return it. If/when you get the OS installed you still have
problems w/ the internal CDRom repost.

I agree. You can purchase a new brand name internal CD ROM drive for about
$30.
