I would like to use the full capacity of my 250 gb hd after installing sp1
update. Is there a simple utility available that can be used for this? I'm a
little leery about editing the registry manually.

If you installed at least SP1 - or you installed SP2 (better option) - then
you are done. You don;t have to do anything else except create the
partitions/format the drive/use the space (disk manager...)

Of course - if your hardware (system BIOS) does not support drives of that
size - it does not matter if Windows XP does...

There was one available on Maxtor site that appended the entries to the
registry

If however this hd is your boot disk, you will still have to add a partition
to the free space.
Win cannot expand the partition, only a third party tool eg Partition Magic
can do that.
