The only way you can create, delete, resize or merge existing partitions,
and not harm your existing Windows XP installation, is to use
a third-party partitioning program such as Partition Magic 8.

Well, I'm guessing by the old date on your message and no reply that I won't get a reply for my similar issue. There are 2 things that I have not tried which might work for you. 1) you can "mount" an NTFS structure as a directory in you C: drive. I'm guessing that MS would go bonkers if you tried to mount it as the "Documents and Settings" folder, but you might get away with mounting another "drive" as your own temp area ex: "Documents and Settings\Joe B" where Joe B points to E:.

2) you can make the users areas point to a different drive rather than the default either by editing the environment variables in the advanced "my computer" system properties, or going through the control panel / computer management / local users and groups and changing the local path for your user's home directory to another drive

I try to run my system pretty standard so have not done this to fix my problem. I want to extend my first NTFS partition, but when I went to do this under my win98se system (dual boot), I found that the boot was depending upon something in the partition after my NTFS partition (on my 2nd disk). So, I'm looking for a way to back up everything, move it to another disk with a bigger NTFS partition -- and so far have found MS backup very inadequate -- it skips things like system files. Useless, eh

Hope that works for you!

For YOUR problem Joe, you will need imaging software.

Create an image (on CDs) of the "98 partition (for dual boot) and an image of the XP partition. Install the new larger drive as master, restore the "98 image, restore the XP image. Depending on the software you use to create the images the partition size can be increased during restoration. I use TrueImage7 from www.acronis.com.

Just reread your problem, image XP to CDs, install the larger drive as slave, resize the partition as needed, restore the XP image.
