Ext USB HD drive letter not showing in Disc Mngmnt

This is very strange. My external USB Maxtor HD's drive letter shows
everywhere EXCEPT in Disc Management...in my second XP Pro partition only.
In the other installations it shows up just fine as it also does in the
associated backup software.
Any ideas why?
