export to excel does nothing

I am in a web appication that has a export to excel button, when I click it
nothing happens. What do I need to do to enable it?
 
Contact the writer of the web application. "Export to excel" normally
translates to "Create an .xls file with the contents of the screen"

Contacting the site owner is a good idea. It would help if you'd provide
more details about the web application.

The assumption is that you indeed have Excel installed, perhaps even
running, on your computer.
