I've noticed recently that Windows Explorer's menus have changed.
Specifically the one item missing is 'Folder options' (or at least that's
what I remember it being called), where I could look at registered file
types and change, among other things, whether hidden files were seen or not.
What could have happened to it and how can I get it back?

Hi

In WE go to Tools>Folder Options. You've then got the option of View & File Types.

You misunderstand. Under the Tools menu there is no longer a "Folder
Options" item. All that is currently there is "Map Network Drive",
"Disconnect Network Drive", and "Synchronize".

It just came to my attention that there should also be a "Folder Options"
item in the Control Panel. I can't find that either.

Hi

In WE go to Tools>Folder Options. You've then got the option of View & File
Types.

Open any folder and go to Tools>Folder Options, it is the last item under
that list. If it is not there try logging on as Administrator and see if it
is there, this will tell you if the policy was changed.

I only have one user account on my computer, so I am always logged in as
Administrator. Folder Options is still not there.

Try this, go to control panel and create a new user with Admin rights also
one with limited rights, log on each one of those accounts and see if the
option comes back. Also a word of advice (NEVER) use the Admin account for
everyday use it opens up to many ways for an attack.

I checked the guest account and created a second admin level account, and
both of them had the Folder Options item in the Tools menu. So how can I get
it back in my own account? I was going to create a new account and delete
the one I use now for a different reason, but I don't want to copy over all
my settings and files in case there's something there that is causing this.

As a side note, when I created the new admin account I was going to call it
"Administrator" but I was told that account already existed. Why is that?

Do not delete the account, I have to do a little home work to get the option
back. If someone else see's this they may answer your question sooner. I
just wanted to give everyone out there the answer which is, it is only
happening to your existing account. New accounts are ok.

OK ready? Right click on My Computer and select Manage. Look under local
users and groups. Under users right click on Administrator and go to member
of tab. Make sure Administrators and Network Configuration Operators are
listed, if not add them. Next go to the Groups and check that the
Administrator account is listed in the Administrator group and Network
Configuration Operators, if not add it. After done close all windows and
reboot. WARNING DO NOT CHANGE ANY PASSWORD DURING THIS OPERATION. After
reboot check all the accounts again. You can also check the new account you
gave Admin rights to while in Manage and see if your Administrator account
has at least the groups listed in that account.
