I am running XP Pro SP1 and started getting some error message or other and
googled it and found that it was related to some hotfix which I was told I
should delete.
Unfortunately I couldn't figure out which one it was so I thought I would
delete all in turn and then either install SP2 or update with a cumulative
patch from the MS site.
I had about twelve of them and was uninstalling all in turn with restarts
when necessary. It TOLD me it was uninstalling and restoring from a backup
of a previously backed up version.
At about hotfix number 8, when I restarted, I started getting a plethora of
suggessive error messages telling me that Windows couldn't access some
starting point within shlwapi.dll which I figured was corrupted and woulndt
start explorer. So I scouted around on a similar machine for this file and
found about four versions. I then tried copying all of them in turn to the
windows\system32 directory and all but one gave the same error message that
it couldn't start some service within this dynamic link library.
Now the position is that I have managed to stop this message but the
computer won't start explorer after logon. I can't figure out how to get to
a sfc /scannow to rectify this.
Is this a known problem and does anyone know how to fix it? Do I dare press
SETUP from an xp install disc which I have somewhere (or run some program
from the i386 firectory within that disc) as I think I could do in Windows
2000 to rectify problems within Windows 2000 without re-installing? I CAN
get to a task manager RUN command (but cant run explorer or SFC)
