i have xpsp2 and windows update tried forcing an update while i wasn't at my
computer since that failed at startup explorer starts and stops over and
over.... the only thing i can bring up is task manager HELP

If you can bring up task manager, can you open event viewer from task
manager?
File > New Task (Run) > eventvwr

is there any info there?

i brought up event viewer and it shows faulting apps in ndetect and explorer
with faulting modules kernel32.dll. also it shows the remote registry has
failed the pipe state is invalid

Try taking the Event ID and Source info to www.eventid.net and looking up
the error messages. Sounds like something is pretty much hosed.

I responded to a similar problem with a different user in this group, but
that user's approach was to roll back to a System Restore point. I made
some suggestions to that end, don't know if it worked out for them or
not.... That thread is under "Very strange Startup Problem! Please advise"
posted by Mojojojo. He also reported the problem occured after an
auto-update.

A thought: if you can get to the cmd prompt the same way you got to
eventvwr, then perhaps you can drill down to the various uninstall routines
for the patches. The directories don't show up right for me on a regular
dir listing, so I used this command from the %windir% directory:

dir spuninst.exe /s

and it should actually find the uninstalls. If you see one with the right
date, then you should be able to run the .exe and roll the patch back.

Not all post SP2 updates are listed here, though. I'm not sure where
they've all got off to, but I show 4 spuninst.exe files, though I know I've
got over a dozen patches installed. Some of these "patches" on my system
are things like MediaPlayer10, so you wouldn't expect them to show up like
others... You should be able to actually call
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com from the task manager Run Prompt and view
your installation history. It'd be interesting to find out which patch is
giving you problems....

thank u so much i found the uninstall program in safe mode using task
manager. It was update kb834707 that caused this terror. back to normal. auto
updates are now shut off!!!!!!!! thanx again

Great! Glad we got it. Since that's actually a cumulative patch ("Update
829165, update 831923, update 812989, update 813503, and update 873346 are
included in all the 834707 security update packages.") I wonder which
security update is ultimately to blame.

I have the patch running on my sytem just fine. Dell M60, ZA 5.1, MS FW
Client 2004, eTrust 6.x, SpyBot, etc.

Do you experience the same problem if you re-install the patch? i.e. is
this something you can repro?

I do NOT recommend continueing to run without this patch. There is a
problem somewhere else, and as glad as I am you've regained access to your
system, I really think the best next step is to figure out how to make this
patch work for you.

I'd start with a thorough virus scan, general system maintenance (kill temp
internet files, cookies, that annoying bit of software you've been meaning
to get rid of for the past few weeks but haven't gotten to, etc), defrag
(twice), make sure Office is updated, make sure anti-virus is updated, etc.
etc.... It seems some people had other problems with this patch that were
related to running ZA and the Windows based firewall. I don't know what
your situation is...

After a good bit of housecleaning (I don't know, maybe you're patching a
brand new install, in which case you can ignore this bit), I'd apply the
cumulative patch again. Now that you know how to kill it, it's not a
problem if it breaks again. If it works then great, if it does break again,
then try each included update individually.
