Try taking the Event ID and Source info to
www.eventid.net and looking up
the error messages. Sounds like something is pretty much hosed.
I responded to a similar problem with a different user in this group, but
that user's approach was to roll back to a System Restore point. I made
some suggestions to that end, don't know if it worked out for them or
not.... That thread is under "Very strange Startup Problem! Please advise"
posted by Mojojojo. He also reported the problem occured after an
auto-update.
A thought: if you can get to the cmd prompt the same way you got to
eventvwr, then perhaps you can drill down to the various uninstall routines
for the patches. The directories don't show up right for me on a regular
dir listing, so I used this command from the %windir% directory:
dir spuninst.exe /s
and it should actually find the uninstalls. If you see one with the right
date, then you should be able to run the .exe and roll the patch back.
Not all post SP2 updates are listed here, though. I'm not sure where
they've all got off to, but I show 4 spuninst.exe files, though I know I've
got over a dozen patches installed. Some of these "patches" on my system
are things like MediaPlayer10, so you wouldn't expect them to show up like
others... You should be able to actually call
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com from the task manager Run Prompt and view
your installation history. It'd be interesting to find out which patch is
giving you problems....
