Are there any optimisations that can be done on Explorer? I have some
directories with lots of items and Explorer takes ages to display the list.

How many items, on average, are we talking about here?
Any possibility you can organize them into subfolders?

There are 1000+ items per folder. I can't really segment into further
folders.

Hmmm - not sure what to suggest. You might look into an alternate file
explorer....I don't know of much you can do with Windows Explorer outside
filtering hidden/system files and whatnot. It isn't very configurable.

I've got a similar problem, but I don't need to access the oldest files more
than once a month. So, I created a subfolder called "Archive", and once a
week, I move files that are more than a month old into there. Obviously,
that folder is now sluggish, but at least I don't need to suffer with it
every day.
