I have a user who, upon logging into the domain, windows starts up normally
and about 5 - 10 seconds after it completes, the desktop completely
dissappears and the windows start key does not work.

right now the only way around this is to ctrl+alt+del, start a new task, and
choose explorer and windows resumes normal function.

i have tried the TweakUI tool, but to no avail.

ny other suggestions?

First i would try to find out which program is causing because it sounds like
virus/trojan activity or the user has installed a program that is causing
this problem, the other thing is to log on using a admin accuont to see if it
happens under that account if it does then you have a virus issue if it
doesn't login using the same admin account back up there data delete the
profile and have them login

thanks for the reply, i have run norton corporate edition on it, and it came
back clean, and i am now running cleaner 4 on it to look specifically for
worms or trojans.

do you recommend any particular program to scan deeper besides the two i am
using now (Cleaner 4 and NAV)?

WHat is the date of your virus database try mcafee's stinger.exe from there
website also try spybot search and destroy and adaware

Ok, so i ran the pc on mcafee's free virus checker, and it said there were 25
instnances of it on the PC, i checked do not use system restore, and am
running stinger on it now. the virus is w32/bagel.dm and .gen versions.

i ran stinger on it, but it hasnt given a report X amount of files
quarentined or what not, is it supposed to? i am going to reboot to see if
explorer stays up, if it doesnt, any alt suggestions?

ok, i ran stinger, adaware, spyware and norton, as well as scanned it for
viruses through mcafee's site. mcafee is the only one who is reporting there
is a problem. i ran stinger and chose the delete file under the options
screen.

no luck, explorer still dissappears upon bootup. i really really dont want
to format c:

Make sure to check your registry editor at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS NT/CURRENT VERSION/WINLOGON

I was having the same problem and when I looked at the Shell value in that
section, I found that it had been changed. The value for Shell should be
Explorer.exe. Hope this helps.
