The problem persists since I installed the latest security fixes from
windowsupdate (Iam not sure if they caused the problem). I have a 32 Bit
displaymode (I can verify that when I view photos they look truecolor) but
the desktop/explorer icons seem only to have 256 colors. The desktop effects
option "Display Icons with highcolor" is also activated.

I tried to set displayplaycolor to 16 and resetted it to 32 bit and I
deactivated "Display Icons with highcolor" and reactivated it - the problem
still persists.

What could be the cause of this problem? Maybe windows caches its icons
somewhere and the 32 bit ones were corrupted - in that case - is there any
way to rebuilt them?

Can you tell me what your screen dimensions are? Can you try 800x600 pixel depth and tell me if you get the same behavior?

Are you running Netmeeting, or any other software with a remote
desktop sharing option? Such software will cause this behavior.

Soyo Motherboard with the 4 pack install (or something to that effect) along
with Win Media Player 9 or 10?

You are right - it was Netmeeting! Now it works again.
