Explorer filter tool?

Hi,

I'm looking for a tool or something to realise a non-standard (but much
wanted) feature in Windows Explorer: I'd like to have the possibility to
filter the contents of explorer windows. To for example make it only show
files with a certain extension, or filenames that contain a particular
string, or files of a specific date or period Ideally, this should also work
from within applications, so that for example browsing thumbnails of images
will only show those that meet the criteria. I know there are probably
viewers that have this built-in, but some plug-in or modification of explorer
would be better.

Does this exist or is it a matter of waiting for Vista (as I believe a
similar feature will be in it?)

I don't think so.

I want to be able to browse folders and have anything that doesn't fit the
criteria remain hidden.

That does not sound like what "search" offers, unless someone will enlighten
me..
 
Sorry, but since you must supply the "criteria" to see the files you
desire, Search IS the method you would use to show only those files.
Browse is Exactly that, Browse.

Try this one. It is a search tool, I think it does what you want.
Freeware, no registration necessary, I like it.
