explorer.exe using memory uncontrollably

I was having trouble setting up internet connection sharing on my XP Pro machine - I had gone through the Home networking wizard a couple of times and on the last instance had accidentally told it to bridge my 2 nework connections (one to the DSL modem and the other to my second machine). Durig the process I got a warning that there was an error with some sort of Spool process/service (I sure wish now that I'd written it down). Pretty sure that I didn't need the network bridge, I went in and tried to delete it as soon as the machine rebooted. Now

1) I can't log onto the internet with the DSL
2) Internet Connection Sharing no longer appears in Properties window for my network connections (because of #1?

3) explorer.exe starts using ridiculous amounts of memopry from the moment the machine is booted. I've sat and watched it in Task Manager get up to 2 Gb of memory used, over less than 10 minutes before the machine ran out of virtual memory and crashed

I have up-to-date anto-virus protection which scans every night and have had no problems indicated by that - internet use for the machine is limited and I do not recall any suspicious emails in the past few days. Everything seems to have started with my changing the network settings

Can anyone help me?

i'm sure by now, you'v tryed restore, i would try safe
mode last good config. and unplug the second machine for
now. if you do get online, i would get a trojan/worm scan
at least.
