every now and then explorer.exe would suddenly turn evil
and start to steadily hog 50% cpu (according to the task
manager). and very occasionally svchost.exe would do the
same thing. I have no idea why. I have SP1 and all the
latest updates...
can anyone help?

How do you know that explorer.exe is doing something "evil"? Perhaps it's
doing something legitimate?

(I'm presuming here that you have installed all critical updates from
Windows Update and are otherwise following safe computing practices.)

by "I have SP1 and all the latest updates" I mean... I
have all the updates...
yet the problem remains...

try to figure out whther it happens after certain event, as in when you try
to open a certain folder.
some avi files for instance may get explorer to hiccup.
