OK, first, I'll admit to being an idiot. In an effort to rid my computer of a
number of spyware and adware programs, I inadvertently deleted something
that's obviously very important to Windows XP Home Edition. The computer will
boot to Windows and run Outlook, Yahoo Messenger, Adobe Photoshop, some of my
games and such, but it will generate a "Windows has encountered an error and
must close" message on Explorer.exe Module: Kernel32.dll when I try to launch
My Computer, My Documents, Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, and the
Recycle Bin. My initial thought was - go get the file out of the Recycle Bin
and restore it. Hmmmmmm. That would work if I could get to the Recycle Bin. I
tried to find the file by looking in the Recycled folder through a DOS
prompt, but I can't find the right file. I have restored all of the files in
that Recycled folder to the Windows directory, and it hasn't worked. I've
even reinstalled XP, but have had no luck. Before I reformat my hard drive
and begin again, I thought I would ask for guidance first.
My XP version is an upgrade from Windows 98. Since the XP reinstall isn't
working, I'm wondering if the file is something that originated from 98 that
isn't updated in the upgrade. Any guesses as to what file it might have been
and how I go about getting it back or getting a replacement?
Also, a bonus question . . . one of the spyware programs has modified my
desktop to show a light gray background that flashes when you move on and off
the icons. If I right-click, I get a different menu that would indicate that
there is a file called desktop.html that it is displaying. Any clues on how
to fix this issue?
Thank you so much for your help. Please contact me at
