Or the AutoRun to see what running process is in the background and causing
this Issue:

Try to look in the Event Viewer for error messages(X), also try to boot with
clean boot and see if shutting down will cause agro to Explorer.exe.
HTH.
Thanks, appreciate your help.
Already have UPH.
Have Autoruns. But I have scores of processes running.
No obviously relevant messages in Event Viewer.
FWIW, Explorer is also sometimes very slow at certain operations. For
example, can take 20-30 seconds to open a folder, or move one up the
hierarchy.
After clicking 'End now', XP closes OK and no obvious problem apparent
when it reboots.
Rock said:Terry what happens in Safe Mode. Does Explorer exhibit the same behavior
there? What about in a different account?
Terry Pinnell said:Thanks. I'll explore both of those and report back. Won't be
re-booting for a while, as lots of work to do first!

Haven't yet tried changing to another use account. I'm sole user, so
any other account would be some 4 year old experimental account, with
a 'minimal configuration'. How would it would help to fix the issue,
even if the message didn't appear in that very restricted account?
Obviously, it's not exactly life threatening anyway! But I would like
to get to the bottom of it, in case it causes any other obscure
problems. Anyone have any more ideas please?
Rock said:Just create a new account of the same type as you have now. This is to test
whether there is corruption with the user profile. If it doesn't happen in
the new account, then one work around is to copy the data and settings from
the current account to the new account. Work in that new account for
awhile. If things are ok delete the old account.
Creating and testing in a new account is a useful troubleshooting technique.

Since the problem was still there in safe mode it means it's not caused by a
driver or software loaded in normal mode (but not safe mode).
