I've had this problem for a while now. Whenever I go to
move or delete a single file (and only a single file
does this), it will often leave behind a "ghost" of
itself. In the case of deleted files, nothing shows
in the Recycle Bin, but it isn't empty. And emptying
it gets an error message: "Can't delete De1. (or Dc1
depending on the drive the file was on) Access is
denied. make sure that the disk is not full or write
protected and that the file is not in use". I get
a similar message trying to move or delete a "ghost"
file, which remains behind after single file moves.
The only way out is to terminate and restart Explorer,
or to reboot.
This is on a WindowsXp SP1 box, and I have tried
most if not all the troubleshooting steps, such as
scanning the drive for errors (it happens with all
of them), running sfc /scannow (finds no corrupted
system files), and even doing a repair install
(which didn't go well because I got an IRQL_NOT_
LESS_OR_EQUAL BSOD related I think to older
corrupted video card drivers that can't be removed.
I also can't go into Safe Mode: I get the same
BSOD.
At this point, I am seriously considering reformatting
my boot drive and reinstalling everything to correct
the Explorer problem and the IRQL BSOD, but I would
like to be able to fix both of these problems as it
would take several hours for me to reformat and
reinstall everything.
The former problem began after restoring some files
from a mounted virtual drive created by Acronis
True Image back around Sep 2. As for the BSOD in
Safe Mode, I'm not sure when that one developed
as the last time I successfully entered it was in
July to troubleshoot another bugcheck related to
my video card being pulled slightly out of the AGP slot.
